The game is set within a post-apocalyptic open world environment encompassing the city of Boston and the surrounding Massachusetts region known as “The Commonwealth.”

The main story takes place in the year 2287, 10 years after the events of Fallout 3 and 210 years after “The Great War”, which caused catastrophic nuclear devastation. The player assumes control of a character simply known as the “Surviving Bachelor”, who emerges from cryogenic stasis in Vault 111, an underground nuclear fallout shelter. After witnessing the murder of his spouse and the kidnapping of his son, the Sole Survivor ventures into the Commonwealth to search for his missing son. The player explores the ruined world of the game, completes various quests, helps various factions, and acquires experience points to level up and increase his character’s skills. New features to the series include the ability to develop and manage settlements and an extensive crafting system where remined materials from the environment can be used to craft explosives, upgrade weapons and armor, and build, furnish and upgrade settlements. Fallout 4 is the first game in the series to feature a fully voiced protagonist. <br<
