PAYDAY is an action-packed, four-player co-op shooter where you rob banks and get paid.

The game consists of a series of "heists", where the player can choose to carry them out on his own, or in a multiplayer game, where he can play with companions managed by artificial intelligence, or with other players. There are several types of heists, from bank robberies, creating electoral fraud, theft of museum pieces to the assault and capture of nuclear warheads. Some of these missions place an emphasis on being played in stealth (without sounding the alarm), generally providing extra experience and/or money if completed this way. There are seven difficulty levels so far (Normal, Hard, Very Hard, Overkill, Mayhem, Death Wish and Death Sentence), each of them providing larger rewards depending on their complexity as well as having a large arsenal of weapons to finish missions more easily and invest money in better weapons which you can modify to your liking and from Pistols to Light Machine Guns all 100% modifiable by finding modifications available or in stock on the cards you find at the end of a successful "Contract".

The level selection is stylized as a web page, Crime.net, where "contracts" or missions appear on a map of the city of Washington. From this interface, the player can create a new contract or join an existing match with other players. Some missions take place over several phases called days, each phase starting as soon as the previous one ends. Each day represents a new map with different objectives, receiving the reward only at the end. In case of being detected by the police on any of these days, the game can add an "escape" map where the police escape attempt failed and it is necessary to flee with all the loot possible towards a new escape route.

The vast majority of heists can be solved in stealth. If players avoid being detected by cameras, motion detectors, lasers, security guards or civilians (the latter can be taken hostage), the alarm will not sound and players will receive an experience bonus. Otherwise, players must complete all the objectives, secure the loot at the indicated location on the map, and escape under the constant pressure of a police assault. Most of the enemies in Payday 2 are part of the police forces of the city of Washington, as well as assault groups from GenSec, a private security company AND Z.E.A.L Legion of elite Z forces (These elite forces can only be found in the Death Sentence difficulty).

The Crimewave edition includes an enhanced graphic engine. Up to four friends co-operate on the hits and as the crew progresses the jobs become bigger, better and more rewarding.
